What is Safety, Security and Emergency Management?
Creating a Safer More Secure World
Safety, Security and Emergency Management (SSEM) represents a cross-disciplinary field concerned with the safety and security of people, in public, private, and in their work environments. Professionals in this field focus on the process and procedure for responding to and dealing with accidents and emergency situations, as well as the measures it takes to prevent these incidents from occurring.
As its name implies our online Master’s Degree in Safety, Security and Emergency Management breaks down into three interrelated subcomponents.
- Safety – In public and in private, our safety is of utmost importance. The safety component of SSEM focuses on industrial and construction safety and ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations in the workplace. Personal and environmental hazards are addressed, as well as risk management and other factors that affect our everyday safety.
- Security – It’s the active component of keeping us safe. Security personnel, both public and private, are tasked with understanding, developing and implementing security measures to recognize, analyze, and eliminate any threats to our personal safety. On a larger scale security impacts our personal safety, our property, our society and our nation as a whole.
- Emergency Management – No matter how prepared we are, emergencies will happen, but it’s how we respond that matters most. On a small scale, emergency management addresses the factors to consider in a moment of crisis so that response is both effective and timely. On a larger scale, emergency management defines how we operate in emergency situations, dictates disaster preparedness, and defines our roles and responsibilities during times of emergency, whether natural or man-made.
These three interlinked components are important to our communities and offer many unique career opportunities in a variety of fields including: security, fire, industrial safety, traffic safety, homeland security, risk management, emergency medical services, loss prevention, asset protection, and more.
